Josh Smith, PhD

Psychologist

Dr. Smith’s work involves development and delivery of evidence-based treatments for substance use and co-occurring disorders. His research interests include psychopathology and treatment models of co-occurring anxiety and alcohol use disorders, and systems-level interventions promoting service access and engagement among psychiatric patients.

Dr. Smith is an Assistant Professor at the Center for Drug and Alcohol Programs (CDAP) in MUSC’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. He completed his undergraduate study at Sam Houston State University with a B.S. in Psychology / Philosophy, and later earned his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Psychology at the University of Cincinnati, specializing in Clinical Health Psychology.


He concluded his training with a pre-doctoral internship at the Charleston Consortium Psychology Internship Program at MUSC. Dr. Smith serves in clinical administrative roles as Director of CDAP’s outpatient services and of the Institute of Psychiatry’s Centralized Inpatient Programming Service.
